David Poyer’s Tiller Galloway series features a rougher, more troubled protagonist than Dan Lenson. Galloway is an ex-Navy diver who did time in prison and now tries to make an honest living in the waters off the Outer Banks and the Gulf Coast. Naturally, things rarely stay quiet for long, and each book pulls him into a new dangerous situation beneath the waves.
The four novels mix diving adventure with crime fiction elements. Hatteras Blue (1989) launched the series with a hunt for sunken World War II cargo, and subsequent books took Galloway to the Bahamas and Louisiana before wrapping up with Down to a Sunless Sea in 1996. Poyer’s knowledge of diving and coastal environments gives these books a strong sense of place.
