A Girl Called Thursday (2002) introduces Thursday Tilford, who was born at the exact moment the First World War ended and named after the day of the week as a sign of hope. By her twenty-first birthday, Britain is at war again, and Thursday volunteers as a Red Cross Voluntary Aid Detachment nurse attached to the Royal Navy. She is posted to Haslar, the Royal Naval hospital near Portsmouth Harbour, where she tends to casualties arriving from the front, including the wounded evacuated from Dunkirk.
A Promise to Keep (2004) picks up after Thursday has spent two years serving as a VAD in Egypt. When she returns to Haslar, the hospital has changed, and so has she. She is caught between two men: Connor Kirkpatrick, a naval doctor she met at Haslar in 1940, and Mark Sangster, an army doctor who traveled with her on the troopship to Egypt. The series is set in the same Portsmouth landscape where Lilian Harry grew up, and Haslar hospital was a real institution she knew well.
