The Threshold series by Peter Clines starts with a simple premise in 14 (2012): a man moves into a suspiciously cheap apartment building in Los Angeles and starts noticing that things are not right. Rooms have strange features, the building’s electrical system makes no sense, and the other tenants seem oddly uncurious about it all. What begins as a mystery slowly becomes something much darker, pulling in elements of Lovecraftian horror and science fiction.
The Fold (2015) expands the world, introducing a government project involving teleportation that connects back to the mysteries of the first book. Dead Moon (2019) and Terminus (2020) continue the story. The series is best read in order, as the books build on each other, gradually revealing the scope of the threat that ties them together.
