Thraxas is a thirteen-book fantasy series by Martin Scott, running from 1999 to 2022. The series follows its title character — a private investigator who would rather be eating and drinking than working but keeps getting drawn into cases by the need to pay his bar tab. Set in the fantasy city of Turai, the books combine traditional sword-and-sorcery elements with the structure of hardboiled detective fiction.
The first novel won the World Fantasy Award in 2000. Subsequent entries — Thraxas and the Warrior Monks, Thraxas at the Races, Thraxas and the Elvish Isles, and onward through Thraxas Meets His Enemies — maintained the series’ tone of comedic investigation in a fantasy setting. The books benefit from Thraxas himself, a protagonist who is neither heroic nor sympathetic in the conventional sense but is consistently entertaining.
