The Wedding Date series began in 2018 when Jasmine Guillory published her debut novel of the same name. The setup is a chance encounter: Alexa Monroe and Dr. Drew Nichols get stuck in a hotel elevator and agree to pose as a couple at a wedding. What follows is warm, funny, and grounded in the specific pleasures of California life, good food, and the push and pull of two people who want different things from their futures.
Each subsequent book shifts focus to a new central couple while keeping the core friend group intact. The Proposal follows Nikole and Carlos, who meet when he steps in after a disastrous public proposal at a baseball game. The Wedding Party brings together Maddie and Theo, two friends of Alexa’s who have never liked each other. Royal Holiday steps outside the Bay Area group to follow Vivian, Maddie’s mother, who finds unexpected romance while accompanying her daughter to London. Party of Two and While We Were Dating continue the series through 2020 and 2021 with new couples and the same easy warmth.
Guillory’s approach across the series is consistent: professional women with full lives, men who are genuinely interested rather than obstructed by ego, and plots that center the relationship rather than manufactured conflict. The books are light without being shallow, and the interconnected cast gives them a satisfying sense of a world that continues beyond each story.
