The Warrior Chronicles, also known as the Saxon Stories or The Last Kingdom series, is a historical fiction saga by Bernard Cornwell. The series spans 13 novels and one companion book, following the life of Uhtred of Bebbanburg from his youth through old age.
Set in 9th and 10th century England, the books tell the story of the wars between the Saxon kingdoms and the invading Danes. Uhtred, born a Saxon but raised by Vikings after his father’s death, is caught between two worlds. He fights alongside Saxon kings, most notably Alfred the Great, while longing to reclaim his ancestral home of Bebbanburg.
Cornwell brings the period to life with vivid battle scenes and careful historical research. The series inspired the Netflix show The Last Kingdom and remains one of the most popular historical fiction series of the past two decades.
