The Waiting is a three-book sports romance series by Ginger Scott, beginning with her debut novel Waiting on the Sidelines in 2013. The series follows Reed Johnson and Nolan Lennox from their high school years through college and into adulthood, with football providing a constant backdrop. Going Long (2013) continues directly from the first book, while The Hail Mary arrived six years later in 2019, dealing with more mature subject matter.
Waiting on the Sidelines is a coming-of-age love story about the heartbreak and confusion that come with growing up. Football season structures much of the plot, but the story focuses on the emotional ups and downs between Reed and Nolan rather than the games themselves. Scott later expanded this world with the Waiting: Next Generation series, which follows the children of the original characters. The Waiting series remains one of Scott’s most popular works and the starting point for many of her readers.
