The Unnamed series is one of Matt Shaw’s more playful structural experiments. The books present themselves as dangerous objects, warning readers away even as they deliver the extreme horror content Shaw is known for. For Every 10 Pages You Read, Someone Will Die (2024) makes the reader complicit in the narrative from the first page, tying fictional deaths to the act of reading itself. Cursed Book! Do Not Read! (2024) continues the conceit with a title that functions as both warning and invitation.
Shaw has always had a strand of dark comedy running through his work, and The Unnamed series lets that side of his writing come forward. The meta-fictional framing does not soften the content, but it gives the books a slightly different tone from his more relentlessly grim work. They are horror books that are aware of themselves as horror books and use that awareness to unsettle the reader in a different way.
Both entries were published in 2024 and are best read together. Start with For Every 10 Pages You Read, Someone Will Die and follow with Cursed Book! Do Not Read! to get the full effect of Shaw’s experiment.
