The Sugar Baron’s Daughters trilogy is set on the Caribbean island of Nevis in the 1770s, where three sisters take over their father’s struggling sugar plantation. Keturah (2018) follows the eldest sister as she arrives on the island and confronts the realities of plantation management, colonial society, and an unexpected romance. Verity (2019) and Selah (2020) turn the focus to the two younger sisters in succession.
The series grapples with the moral weight of its setting. The sugar plantation economy was built on enslaved labor, and Bergren doesn’t sidestep this. The sisters’ faith puts them at odds with the norms of their time, and the books trace their attempts to run the plantation more humanely while facing social and economic pressure from neighboring planters.
