The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell tells the story of a Jesuit priest, Emilio Sandoz, who leads a mission to the planet Rakhat after detecting alien music from space. The novel alternates between the preparation for the journey and its devastating aftermath.
Children of God (1998) continues the story as Sandoz is forced to return to Rakhat. The two novels together explore questions about faith, cultural contact, and the consequences of well-intentioned interference. The Sparrow won the Arthur C. Clarke Award and the James Tiptree Jr. Award.
