The Snopes Trilogy follows the Snopes family as they rise from poor tenant farmers to positions of influence in the fictional town of Jefferson, Mississippi. The Hamlet (1940) introduces Flem Snopes and his clan as they begin their takeover of the hamlet of Frenchman’s Bend.
The Town (1957) moves the action to Jefferson, where Flem continues his climb, and The Mansion (1959) brings the story to its conclusion. Faulkner worked on the Snopes material for decades, and the trilogy represents one of his most sustained narrative projects.
