The Smoke Thieves series is Sally Green’s second major work, moving from the contemporary urban fantasy of the Half Bad Trilogy into a more traditional secondary-world setting. The first book introduces five characters in different kingdoms, each with their own problems, and slowly draws their paths together. Catherine is a princess about to be married off for political advantage. Ambrose is her guard, falsely accused of treason. March is a servant with a personal vendetta. Tash hunts demons for a living. Edyon is a thief who turns out to have royal blood.
The series includes three English-language novels (The Smoke Thieves, The Demon World, and The Burning Kingdoms) along with German editions of some entries. Green uses the multiple-POV structure to build a world with competing factions, magical smoke that grants temporary powers, and a demon threat that grows more dangerous with each book. The tone is darker than most YA epic fantasy, with real consequences for the characters and political betrayals that keep the alliances shifting throughout the series.
