The Silencer launched in 2018 as part of DC’s New Age of Heroes initiative, a wave of new creator-owned-style characters introduced into the mainstream DC universe. Dan Abnett created Honor Guest, a former assassin living as a suburban wife and mother whose cover is blown when her old organisation comes looking for her. The series draws on action thriller conventions, with Honor using her sonic powers and combat training to protect her family while navigating the politics of DC’s assassin underworld.
The series is notable for introducing a new female action hero into the DC lineup with a domestic life as a central element of the story rather than an obstacle to it. Honor’s family is a genuine part of her character rather than simply a motivation for violence, and Abnett spent time developing her civilian relationships alongside the action sequences. The first volume was launched to strong sales as part of DC’s initiative to establish new ongoing characters.
The collected volumes include both the main Silencer series and associated tie-in issues. Volume one is the recommended starting point, establishing Honor’s character and situation before the ongoing conflict with Talia al Ghul’s organisation escalates through subsequent volumes.
