The Science Masters is a series of compact popular science books published in the mid-1990s and 2000s. The idea behind the series was simple: invite leading scientists to write short, readable introductions to their areas of expertise. Richard Dawkins contributed River Out of Eden, which covers evolutionary biology using the metaphor of a river of DNA flowing through time.
Other contributors include Lee Smolin on quantum gravity, Steven Pinker on how the mind handles language, and Lynn Margulis on symbiosis and evolution. The books were designed to be brief enough to finish in a few sittings while still giving readers real insight into each subject. Many of the titles were reissued in later years with updated introductions.
