The School for Good and Evil is a nine-book fantasy series that puts a fresh spin on fairy tale conventions. Sophie and Agatha are best friends from an ordinary village who get pulled into a school where the next generation of fairy tale characters are trained. The twist is that the girl who thinks she’s destined to be a princess ends up in the villain’s school, and vice versa.
The series ran from 2013 to 2023 and grew more complex with each installment. A Netflix film adaptation came out in 2022. Chainani’s writing is funny, surprising, and smarter than it first appears, which is why the books have connected with so many young readers.
