After ten years of public demand, Arthur Conan Doyle brought Sherlock Holmes back from the dead. The Return of Sherlock Holmes contains thirteen stories first published in The Strand Magazine between October 1903 and December 1904. The opening story, The Adventure of the Empty House, explains Holmes’s survival and reintroduces him to both Watson and the reader.
The stories in this collection show Holmes at full strength. The Adventure of the Dancing Men features a code-breaking puzzle, The Adventure of the Six Napoleons builds to an unexpected conclusion involving a stolen gem, and The Adventure of the Priory School is one of the longer and more involved cases. Doyle had clearly found renewed enthusiasm for his detective after the long break, and several of these stories rank among his finest work in the genre.
