The Real People series is Robert J. Conley’s most ambitious work, spanning 12 novels published between 1992 and 2002. The books trace Cherokee history from precontact spiritual life through encounters with European colonizers, telling the story from a Cherokee perspective rather than a European one.
“Real People” translates “Ani Yunwiya,” the name the Cherokee use for themselves. Each novel focuses on a different period or figure, from priests and warriors to historical leaders like Sequoyah. The series represents Conley’s effort to give Cherokee history the epic literary treatment it deserves.
