The Rat series is Haruki Murakami’s earliest body of work, starting with his debut novel Hear the Wind Sing in 1979. The series follows an unnamed narrator and a character called the Rat, moving from realistic settings into increasingly surreal territory. Pinball, 1973 (1980) and A Wild Sheep Chase (1982) continued the story.
Dance, Dance, Dance (1988) is the fourth and final novel in the sequence. Several of the books appear in both Japanese and translated editions in the catalog, reflecting Murakami’s international readership. A Wild Sheep Chase is often considered the book that brought Murakami to wider attention outside Japan.
