The Queen’s Council is a Disney/Hyperion multi-author series in which each volume reimagines a different Disney princess in a historically informed alternate setting. Sara Raasch contributed the fourth entry, A Sword in Slumber (2024), which reimagines the story of Aurora (Sleeping Beauty) in a setting inspired by historical Austria. Raasch’s entry came three years after the series launched with Emma Theriault’s Rebel Rose.
The series format gives each author a specific princess and a specific historical setting to interpret — closer to historical fiction than to traditional YA fantasy — and the project draws on each writer’s existing strengths. A Sword in Slumber arrived as Raasch was also active with co-written romantasy (Witch and Hunter) and her own romance series, and it represents a different kind of contracted creative work from her independent projects.
The four books in the series are standalone and can be read in any order.
