The Petticoat Party series is a four-book sequence of children’s historical fiction set during the westward migration of the 1840s. Kathleen Karr built the series around a fun premise: the men leading a wagon train on the Oregon Trail are so bad at the job that the women and girls decide to take over. The resulting “Petticoat Party” runs things their own way as the group pushes west.
Go West, Young Women! (1996) introduces the wagon train and its colorful characters. Phoebe’s Folly (1996) focuses on one girl’s misadventures along the trail. Oregon, Sweet Oregon (1997) brings the party to their destination, and Gold-Rush Phoebe (1998) sends Phoebe north to California during the gold rush. The books were aimed at middle-grade readers and combine humor with real details about life on the overland trails.
