Daisy Goodwin launched The Nation’s Favourite Poems series in the late 1990s, building on her work in British television. The Nation’s Favourite Poems: Book 1 (1996) and The Nation’s Favourite Love Poems (1997) drew on a BBC initiative where the public voted for the poems that meant the most to them. The project struck a chord with readers, and the anthologies became consistent bestsellers in the UK.
Goodwin expanded the concept across several themed volumes. The Nation’s Favourite Children’s Poems (2001) and The Nation’s Favourite Animal Poems (2001) brought the format to younger readers and animal lovers, while The Nation’s Favourite Poems of Remembrance (2003) collected works tied to grief and memory. The Nation’s Favourite: Comic Poems (1998) showed the lighter side of the series. More Nation’s Favourite Poems (2004) served as a sequel to the original collection, adding more reader-chosen selections.
