The Minotaur Trilogy is Thomas Burnett Swann’s best-known work, beginning with Day of the Minotaur (1966). Set in ancient Crete and its surrounding forests, the series reimagines the world of Greek myth as a place where minotaurs, dryads, and other creatures live in a fading civilization. Rather than portraying these beings as monsters, Swann presents them as sympathetic characters facing the advance of human culture.
The trilogy includes The Forest of Forever (1971) and Cry Silver Bells (1977), which were collected together in 1996. Day of the Minotaur and the related shorter works were nominated for Hugo Awards, making this series the foundation of Swann’s literary reputation.
