The Macharian Crusade trilogy by William King tells the story of Lord Solar Macharius, one of the greatest generals in Warhammer 40,000 lore. Narrated by a common soldier, the books follow the crusade from its early victories through its eventual collapse. Angel of Fire, Fist of Demetrius, and Fall of Macharius were published between 2012 and 2014.
King uses the ground-level perspective to give readers a view of massive 40K battles through the eyes of ordinary people caught up in them. Macharius himself is a distant, almost mythical figure for much of the series, which makes the rare moments of direct interaction more striking. The trilogy works as both a war story and a character study of ambition and its limits.
