The Last Survivors opens in a world long past the initial collapse, where humanity has retreated into walled communities and developed myths and social structures around the ruins of the old world. The series follows characters who begin to question what lies beyond the walls and what actually happened to bring civilization to this state. That tension between the safety of ignorance and the cost of truth runs through all six books.
The collaboration between Bobby Adair and T.W. Piperbrook gives the series a slightly different feel from either author’s solo work, leaning more toward post-apocalyptic dystopia than straight survival horror. The worldbuilding has a longer view than most in the genre, since the characters are inheriting the consequences of a collapse rather than living through it. For readers who enjoy apocalyptic fiction with a more societal and historical dimension, the series is worth starting from the beginning with The Last Survivors.
