The Hunt series by Andrew Fukuda is a dystopian YA trilogy that inverts traditional vampire fiction. In this world, the dominant species feeds on humans, and Gene is one of the last people left, hiding in plain sight by mimicking the behaviors of the creatures around him. When a rare government-sponsored hunt of surviving humans is announced and Gene is chosen to participate, his carefully maintained cover begins to unravel.
The series includes a short prequel, The Lightning Storm, followed by the three main novels. Fukuda’s premise earned comparisons to The Hunger Games for its survival stakes, though the world-building goes in a distinctly different and darker direction. The books move fast and don’t shy away from the horror elements of Gene’s situation.
