Rudy Rucker’s The Hollow Earth takes the old pseudo-scientific idea that the earth is hollow and runs with it as fiction. The original 1990 novel follows a young Virginia farmer who travels with a fictionalized Edgar Allan Poe to the earth’s interior, finding a world of bizarre creatures and impossible physics.
Return to the Hollow Earth, published in 2018, revisits the concept with new characters and updated Rucker weirdness. The series is lighter and more adventure-focused than his cyberpunk work, but still packed with the kind of wild ideas that define his fiction.
