The History of England is Peter Ackroyd’s most ambitious non-fiction project, covering the full span of English history across eight volumes. Foundation (2011) begins the series and Tudors (2012) follows, with subsequent volumes covering the Civil War, the age of revolution, and the modern period through Innovation (2021).
Each volume is written in Ackroyd’s narrative style, telling history through stories and characters rather than dry chronology. The series took a decade to complete and represents one of the most extensive single-author histories of England published in recent years.
