The Hate U Give began as a short story Angie Thomas wrote in her college creative writing class after the 2009 shooting of Oscar Grant. The title comes from a Tupac Shakur acronym: THUG LIFE. The debut novel follows 16-year-old Starr Carter, who witnesses her unarmed childhood friend Khalil shot and killed by a police officer during a traffic stop.
The book spent more than 80 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and won multiple awards including the William C. Morris Award and the Coretta Scott King Award. Concrete Rose, published in 2021, is a prequel set 17 years before the original novel and follows Starr’s father, Maverick Carter, as a teenager in Garden Heights.
