The Grimm Diaries Prequels is a collection of short novellas by Cameron Jace, published in quick succession in 2012 and 2013. Each one is narrated by a different fairy tale character — Snow White, Cinderella, Red Riding Hood, Rumpelstiltskin, and many others — who claims to set the record straight about what really happened before the Brothers Grimm got hold of their stories.
The prequels are short, fast reads, and many of them subvert the familiar moral structure of their source tales. The heroines are rarely passive, the villains have reasons, and the happy endings of the originals are often revealed to be cover-ups. Titles like “Snow White Blood Red,” “Beauty Never Dies,” and “Lady Bluebeard” give a sense of the series’ darkly playful tone.
With 24 entries, the series rewards binge reading — each novella is self-contained but builds toward the larger mythology explored in the four main Grimm Diaries novels. Start with “Snow White Blood Red” and read in publication order.
