The Grimm Diaries by Cameron Jace takes the premise that fairy tale characters are real, that their stories were distorted by the Brothers Grimm, and that the truth is far stranger than the versions passed down to children. The series begins with Snow White Sorrow and Cinderella Dressed in Ashes, both published in 2013.
The series has a gothic, melodramatic quality that sets it apart from lighter fairy tale retellings. Jace is interested in the idea of storytelling as control — who gets to write history, and what happens to the people whose stories are rewritten against their will. Those themes run through all four books.
The Blood, Milk & Chocolate duology concludes the series, published in 2015 and 2016. Readers new to Cameron Jace’s work should start with the Grimm Diaries Prequels series alongside, as the two are companion pieces rather than strictly sequential reads.
