Mark Winegardner’s two Godfather novels pick up the Corleone family story after the events of Mario Puzo’s original. The Godfather Returns covers the years between the first and second films, filling in gaps in Michael Corleone’s rise to power. The Godfather’s Revenge continues forward into the early 1960s, with the family navigating Cold War politics and internal betrayals.
Winegardner took on a difficult assignment with these books. Writing in someone else’s fictional universe, especially one as well-known as the Corleone saga, requires balancing fidelity to the source material with original storytelling. The novels expand the world Puzo created while maintaining the family-drama-meets-organized-crime structure that made the original so popular.
