The Front series by Craig DiLouie takes World War II and adds a nightmare. The premise is straightforward: Nazi occult experiments have raised the dead, and now Allied forces have to fight their way through Europe against enemies that refuse to die. Screaming Eagles follows American paratroopers dropped behind enemy lines to face this new threat. Red Devils shifts to British commandos tackling the same horror from another front. Berlin or Bust brings the fight to the heart of the Third Reich.
DiLouie combines his skills in both military fiction and horror to create something that works on both levels. The combat scenes are tactically detailed and brutal, while the horror elements add a layer of dread that straight war fiction can’t match. The series doesn’t waste time explaining the supernatural too deeply. The dead are walking, the Nazis did it, and somebody has to stop it. That simplicity keeps the focus on the soldiers and the increasingly desperate fights they find themselves in.
