Jon Hollins’ Dragon Lords trilogy starts with a simple enough premise: a farmer and his motley crew decide to rob a dragon. Fool’s Gold sets up this heist-meets-fantasy story, and the subsequent books, False Idols and Bad Faith, escalate the stakes as the heroes find themselves caught up in something much larger than a simple theft.
The series works because Hollins keeps the tone fun without making it feel throwaway. The characters are flawed and frequently in over their heads, which generates both humor and genuine tension. Published between 2016 and 2018, the trilogy is a complete story with a clear beginning, middle, and end.
