The Decurion Saga marks Richard Swan’s move into science fiction publishing at the mainstream level, with The Infinite State (2026) published by Tor. The setting — a fascist galactic empire ruled by a figure called the Pater Aeternus — allows Swan to apply the same interest in institutional authority and individual resistance that shaped the Empire of the Wolf fantasy series to a science fiction frame.
Katherine Fuller, one of the point-of-view characters, inherits the resources of her deceased husband (a party member) and uses them to purchase a planet where she attempts to construct a democratic society within the empire’s reach. The premise puts individual conscience against systemic power in terms that recall both classic political science fiction and Swan’s legal background.
As a new series, The Infinite State is the starting point.
