The Dead House (2015) is Dawn Kurtagich’s debut novel, told entirely through found documents: diary entries, police interviews, psychiatrist’s notes, newspaper clippings, and video transcripts. Three students die in a fire at Elmbridge High School and Carly Johnson disappears. The central mystery is that Carly’s body houses two souls – Carly by day and Kaitlyn by night – and both may be unreliable witnesses to what happened. The novel was a YALSA Top 10 pick and has been optioned for television by Lime Productions.
The Naida Tapes (2016) is a companion novella. After the Elmbridge fire, Naida Chounan-Dupre is locked in a high-security psychiatric hospital. She believes she is the only thing standing between the world and a demon, and she is in possession of a mysterious box with a warning meant for Kaitlyn.
