The Changes Trilogy is a series of three children’s novels by Peter Dickinson, published between 1968 and 1970. The books are set in an England where people have suddenly turned against all machines and technology, reverting to a pre-industrial way of life. The cause of this mass rejection of machinery is mysterious, and each book approaches the situation from a different angle and set of characters.
Dickinson wrote the trilogy in reverse chronological order. The Weathermonger came first in publication but is set last in the story’s timeline, while The Devil’s Children was published last but covers the earliest events. Heartsease falls in the middle either way. The BBC adapted the trilogy into a television series called The Changes in 1975. Dickinson, who won the Carnegie Medal twice during his career, wrote more than fifty novels for adults and young readers. The Changes Trilogy is among his most recognized work for younger audiences.
