The Budayeen Cycle is a three-novel cyberpunk series that follows Marid Audran, a freelance operator in the Budayeen, the seedy entertainment district of a futuristic Middle Eastern city. In this world, people can plug personality modules (“moddies”) and skill chips (“daddies”) directly into their brains, altering who they are on demand.
The trilogy blends hard-boiled detective fiction with cyberpunk tropes and Islamic culture in a way that was unusual for the genre in the 1980s. When Gravity Fails introduced the world and Marid’s reluctant transformation from street hustler to someone with real power. The later books deepened both the world-building and Marid’s moral compromises.
