The Border Chronicles by Bertrice Small is a ten-book historical romance series that begins on the Scottish-English border during the Tudor era and eventually moves to Renaissance Florence. The first six books (A Dangerous Love through Bond of Passion) focus on different women living along the contested border region, where clan loyalties, English ambitions, and personal desires collide. Each book features a different heroine, though the stories are loosely connected by geography and period.
The final four entries (Bianca, Francesca, Lucianna, and Serena) shift the action to Florence and follow the four daughters of a silk merchant as they find husbands and navigate Italian society. These four books are also the core of The Silk Merchant’s Daughters series. Small used The Border Chronicles as a broad umbrella that covered her historical romances from this period, grouping them by the interconnected publication timeline rather than strict plot continuity.
The first six Border Chronicles books also appear in the World of Hetar combined reading order, since they were published alongside those fantasy novels. Each Border Chronicles book works well on its own, so readers can pick them up in any order, though reading sequentially gives a better sense of the historical progression from the Tudor borderlands to Renaissance Italy.
