The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes was the first short story collection featuring Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous detective. The twelve stories were originally published in The Strand Magazine between July 1891 and June 1892, with illustrations by Sidney Paget that helped define the public image of Holmes. The collection was published as a book in October 1892.
These stories established the formula that made Holmes a household name: a client arrives at 221B Baker Street with a problem, Holmes examines the clues, and a solution follows through close observation and logical reasoning. The cases range from blackmail (A Scandal in Bohemia) to secret societies (The Red-headed League) to murder (The Boscombe Valley Mystery). Several of the stories in this collection are considered among the strongest in the entire canon. This listing also includes various international editions and translations published over the years.
