Tess of the Road takes place in the same world as Rachel Hartman’s Seraphina novels but tells a very different story. Tess Dombegh, Seraphina’s half-sister, leaves home to walk across the continent, working through personal trauma and discovering a world larger than the one she was raised in. The series has a road-novel structure, episodic and exploratory, that sets it apart from the more plot-driven Seraphina books.
In the Serpent’s Wake, the sequel, takes Tess to sea and expands the world further. Hartman uses the journey format to explore themes of autonomy, recovery, and the slow process of figuring out who you are when the life you were given does not fit.
