Terry Lynn Johnson’s standalone novels share a focus on young characters in outdoor settings who face real physical challenges. Dogsled Dreams, her debut, follows a girl pursuing her dream of racing sled dogs and is clearly drawn from Johnson’s own years of dog mushing. Ice Dogs builds on similar territory with higher stakes, stranding a teenage girl and a boy in the Alaskan wilderness during a storm.
Her more recent novels branch out slightly. Falcon Wild explores the world of falconry through a girl who talks her way into a program by claiming to be older than she is. Sled Dog School and Rescue at Lake Wild are aimed at younger readers and pair animal stories with themes of responsibility and problem-solving. Dog Driven returns to mushing with a protagonist who is losing her vision, adding an extra layer of difficulty to an already dangerous sport.
