The Terry Clane series is a two-book mystery series by Erle Stanley Gardner, published in 1937 and 1946. The books follow Terry Clane, an American with extensive knowledge of Chinese culture and the Far East, who applies his unusual background to solving crimes. Murder Up My Sleeve introduces the character, and The Case of the Backward Mule is the follow-up.
The two books are a minor part of Gardner’s catalog but reflect his interest in using unconventional detective figures alongside the more institutionally based Mason and Selby. Terry Clane occupies a niche similar to other exotic-background detectives of the 1930s and 1940s era. The series did not expand beyond two entries.
