H. Beam Piper mapped out a future history spanning thousands of years, from humanity’s first steps into interstellar space through the rise and fall of galactic civilizations. The stories in this sequence were published as standalone novels and novelettes through the 1950s and early 1960s, and together they form a coherent timeline of political upheaval, colonization, and technological change.
Space Viking (1963) is probably the best-known novel in this sequence. It follows Lucas Trask, a nobleman from a feudal colony world who builds a fleet of warships to hunt his wife’s killer and ends up reshaping interstellar politics. Other entries include Four-Day Planet, about a colony world with extreme day-night cycles, and Uller Uprising, set during a colonial rebellion. The Cosmic Computer deals with a postwar planet searching for a legendary military computer. These stories share a common universe but can be read independently.
