Ted Dekker’s standalone novels represent some of his most accessible work. Each book tells a complete story with no series connections required, making them easy entry points for readers unfamiliar with his larger fictional universe. The standalones tend to lean heavily into psychological thriller territory, with twists and revelations driving the plots.
Thr3e (2003) is probably the most well-known standalone, following a seminary student who receives threatening phone calls from a killer who may or may not be real. BoneMan’s Daughters (2009) goes darker, telling the story of a military intelligence officer hunting a serial killer who has abducted his estranged daughter. The Bride Collector (2009) features an FBI agent tracking a murderer who poses his victims as brides, with help from residents of a psychiatric facility.
Later standalones like The Girl Behind the Red Rope (2019, co-written with Rachelle Dekker) and Play Dead (2021) show Dekker continuing to experiment with different thriller formats. Blink of an Eye, Adam, Kiss, Obsessed, and Burn round out the collection, each offering a different flavor of suspense while maintaining the faith-infused undertones that run through all of Dekker’s writing.
