Short fiction has been central to T.C. Boyle’s career from the very beginning. His first book was Descent of Man (1979), a collection that already displayed his dark humor and inventive premises. Over the next four decades he published fifteen collections, establishing himself as one of the most prolific short story writers in American literature.
The range across these collections is remarkable. Greasy Lake gave readers stories about suburban mischief and existential dread, while later collections like Wild Child and The Relive Box tackled technology and modern anxieties. His two Collected Stories volumes, from 1993 and 2013, run to hundreds of pages each and are the best way to get the full picture of his short fiction output.
