Tania James’s three standalone novels each take on different periods and settings. Atlas of Unknowns (2009) is a contemporary story about two sisters in Kerala, one of whom immigrates to New York. The Tusk That Did the Damage (2015) tells its story from three perspectives, including that of an elephant, and deals with ivory poaching in India.
Loot (2023) moves to the 18th century and follows a young Indian woodcarver whose life changes after the British siege of Tipu Sultan’s palace. The three novels share James’s interest in South Asian culture and history but are otherwise unconnected.
