The Tales of the Willows is William Horwood’s series of authorized sequels to The Wind in the Willows. The Willows in Winter (1993), Toad Triumphant (1995), The Willows and Beyond (1996), and The Willows at Christmas (1999) continue the beloved adventures of Grahame’s characters while capturing the spirit of the original.
Mole, Ratty, Badger, and Toad return in new adventures that keep the gentle, pastoral tone of Grahame’s 1908 classic. The Willows in Winter picks up where the original left off, and Toad Triumphant gives the series’ most flamboyant character center stage. Horwood was an established novelist before taking on these sequels, known for his Duncton Wood animal fantasy series.
The four books were published across six years, with The Willows at Christmas (1999) closing out the sequence. Readers who grew up with The Wind in the Willows will find the familiar world intact, while younger readers can use these as a way to spend more time with the characters after finishing the original.
