The Tales of the Kingdom series sits apart from Voigt’s realistic family dramas — it is set in a medieval world with feudal hierarchies, quests, and characters defined by their social position and personal choices. The first book, Tales of the Kingdom (1983), established the world, and each subsequent novel introduces a new protagonist navigating that world’s constraints.
Several books in the series were published under alternate titles: Jackaroo also appeared as The Tale of Gwyn, On Fortune’s Wheel as The Tale of Birle, The Wings of a Falcon as The Tale of Oriel, and Elske as The Tale of Elske. The dual-title history reflects the series’ publishing complexity, but all six books are part of the same extended world. Elske (1999) was the final entry.
