Tade Thompson’s standalone novels show the breadth of his interests beyond the Wormwood and Molly Southbourne series. Making Wolf (2015), his debut, won the Golden Tentacle Award and follows Weston Kogi, a man dragged into investigating a warlord’s death after returning to a fictional West African country for a funeral. It reads more like a crime novel than science fiction, though Thompson’s dry humor and sharp observations are already in place.
Far from the Light of Heaven (2021) is a locked-room mystery set on a sleeper ship, where the captain wakes to find passengers dead and the AI unresponsive. Jackdaw (2022) moves to contemporary Britain for a darker, more personal supernatural story. Liberation (2025) is his most recent standalone. Across all four, Thompson demonstrates the same willingness to move between genres and settings that defines his career.
