Sylvie and Bruno (1889) and Sylvie and Bruno Concluded (1893) were Lewis Carroll’s last novels. They tell parallel stories set in two worlds: a fairy realm called Outland and a realistic Victorian English setting. The fairy children Sylvie and Bruno move between both, connecting the storylines.
Carroll worked on these books for over twenty years, weaving in material from previously published magazine pieces. The novels are far more ambitious than the Alice books in scope, mixing comedy with serious discussions of religion, morality, and social issues. They never matched the popularity of Alice, but Carroll considered them his most important literary works.
